The worst has occurred. In the big scale of things, it isn’t the worst-worst situation; the world isn’t about to end or anything, but it is horrible. The opening scene of The Fatal Raid, a 2019 Hong Kong action film that has only recently hit theaters, was shot with shaky-cam. That’s right, all of those many hours of preparation and battle choreography were for naught since you missed it all in the blur of a camera being flung around. It’s like viewing a movie on your phone while on a rollercoaster. Unfortunately, things do not improve much as The Fatal Raid proceeds. Because it is a low-budget picture, I suppose some flaws may be overlooked, such as the evident vacant streets, parking lots, and warehouses where scenes are shot. I would really like it, but there wasn’t much to like in it. Instead, I’m going to watch an authentic Hong Kong action film from the 1980s to remind me that there are decent ones.
