Jan De Bont followed up on the enormous success of Speed with this incredibly engaging and amusing film about a gang of tornado chasers striving to show what makes a tornado operate. This picture, like Speed, moves at a breakneck pace thanks to fantastic set pieces, a killer Mark Mancina music, and simply amazing visual effects. All of the performers do well, particularly Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes, and the late, great Phillip Seymour-Hoffman, who gives an early performance. The sound effects in this picture are among the finest in cinema history; it sounds like the tornado is an animal chasing you, and it is quite powerful. It’s more than 20 years old, yet it still works fine.
